He was quiet for a moment.

“My brother was right about one thing,” he said. “Before you came, I had accepted the arrangements. I had arranged my life around the things I had lost and the things that remained and I had stopped asking whether there was another option.” He looked at me directly. “You exist as another option.”

My heart was doing something inconvenient.

“I’m not an option,” I said. “I’m a person.”

“Yes,” he said. “That’s what makes you an option.”

I looked at him.

“There’s a specific way you’re saying that that sounds almost romantic,” I said.

“I’m attempting romantic,” he said. “It may be coming out as strategic.”

I laughed.

It startled him. And then, slowly, with the quality of something unused, he smiled.

Not small this time. Not rusty. A real smile, reaching his eyes, transforming his face into something that would have made the world completely different if it appeared more often.

“Hannah,” he said.

“Yes.”

“I would like, with your permission, to understand what exists between what I feel for you and whatever you might be willing to feel for me.”

“That’s a very formal sentence.”

“I’m not good at the informal one yet.”

“What’s the informal version?”

He paused.

“I love you,” he said. “And I would like to stop pretending I’m managing that.”

The room was very quiet.

I thought about forty-three dollars and three rent notices and a teaching career burned to the ground by the truth. I thought about a boy in a navy sweater pressing himself against my leg. I thought about a man sitting on the bottom stair because his son needed them at the same level.

“I love you,” I said. “And I have conditions.”

Something in his face released.

“I expected nothing less,” he said.

I will not tell you the marriage was simple.

Nothing in Lucas Ravellini’s life was simple, which meant nothing in ours would be either. “Don’t ruin her,” she said.

“I’m trying not to.”

“Try harder.”

“Yes, Mrs. Cooper.”

She looked at David. “He’s honest, at least.”

“That’s the terrifying part,” David said.

On the eleventh day, Lucas stood in David’s living room with a small ring box and no speech prepared.

He said: “I could tell you this makes everything safer. It doesn’t. I could promise you a life without risk. I can’t. I could tell you my past is finished following us. It isn’t.”

He opened the box.

“I’m asking because Mateo chose you before I knew I needed someone. Because you make room for breath in a house built around grief. Because you tell me no and you mean it. Because I love you, and I want to spend the rest of whatever time we have learning how to love without possessing.”

I looked at my brother, who was trying to look neutral and failing.

I looked at Mateo, who was asleep on David’s couch with his rabbit.

I said: “I have conditions.”

Lucas said: “I know.”

I said them all. He agreed to each one with the quality of someone who had thought about them before I said them.

I said yes.

Six months after the wedding, I opened a small learning center.

Lucas had found the space — a converted brownstone in Brooklyn, three classrooms, good light, the kind of building that felt like it had been waiting for exactly this purpose. I looked at him for a long time.

Mateo came twice a week after preschool and sat at the back table with a drawing pad. He drew pigeons in sunglasses. All of them. Dozens of pigeons, all deeply suspicious, some of them wearing little coats.

“For Lucia,” he said one afternoon.

“Yes,” I said. “She’d appreciate the surveillance gear.”

He giggled.

On a Sunday in May, almost a year after the five women and the floor and the first choice, we went to Central Park.

The trees were loud with green. Mateo ran ahead to the fountain and crouched at the edge to look at his reflection, which he had recently decided was very funny for reasons I didn’t fully understand.

Lucas walked beside me with his hand at the small of my back, which was his version of holding on.

“You’re thinking,” he said.

“I’m always thinking.”

“What about?”

“The night Mateo came downstairs. In your office. He said: I choose her. For my mother.”

Lucas was quiet.

“What did that mean?” I asked. “He’s never explained it.”

“I think—” Lucas paused. “I think he meant that his mother loves him in a way that can’t be present. And he was choosing something that could.”

“Something present.”

“Someone who stays.”

I thought about that.

“He didn’t say mother,” I said. “He said for my mother. Like he was doing it on her behalf.”

Lucas stopped walking.

I stopped too.

He looked at me with the specific quality I had come to understand was his version of being undone — not dramatic, not visible to anyone who wasn’t paying attention, just a stillness in him that meant something had arrived that he hadn’t prepared for.

“Yes,” he said. “I think that’s what he meant.”

Mateo called from the fountain: “Hannah! Daddy! Come look, there’s a pigeon!”

Lucas closed his eyes for one second.

When he opened them, something in his face was different.

Lighter.

We walked to the fountain together, and I watched Lucas crouch beside his son to look at the pigeon, which was sitting on the fountain ledge with the suspicious dignity of a pigeon that has been told it matters.

“Government?” Mateo said.

“Unquestionably,” Lucas said.

“I knew it.”

I stood behind them, watching this man and this boy, and thought about all the things I hadn’t known I was choosing a year ago when I sat on a floor and opened my arms.

I had chosen to stay.

Mateo had chosen me.

Lucas, slowly and badly and with full honesty about what it was costing him, had chosen to be chosen.

And Lucia — whose photograph now sat face-up on the library shelf, whose name was spoken aloud at breakfast and bedtime and occasionally during arguments about pigeons — Lucia was the reason any of it was possible.

Because she had been so loved that her loss had broken something open in both of them, and I had walked into the crack, and we had all decided that broken open was not the same as broken.

“Ice cream?” Mateo said.

“If your father promises not to threaten anyone in line,” I said.

Lucas placed his hand over his heart with the exaggerated solemnity of a man who had recently learned that ceremony was sometimes the same thing as joy.

“I will attempt restraint,” he said.

We walked toward the vendor.

Mateo between us.

Both our hands.

His choice holding us together.
